Space Track

When more sophisticated tracking methods came into use, CAP still played a role. Data on satellite orbits and overhead times were broadcast to scientific tracking locations over CAP’s nationwide radio net.

The crude radio shacks of WWII Coastal Patrol were the precursors of a national CAP radio net for non-telephone communications in national emergency or domestic disaster. It is used frequently to coordinate CAP search and rescue operations, since CAP aircraft carry special frequencies to communicate with the Net.

Aerospace Education

In the Cold War, America needed an “air-minded” citizenry and a military-minded youth. Led by educators like Dr. Mervin Strickler and Jack Sorenson, CAP’s cadet curriculum was keyed to advancement in rank though education and testing.

Its leadership in high school and college aerospace education programs included the annual National Conference on Aviation and Space Education (NCASE) attended by teachers from across the nation.

International Air Cadet Exchange (IACE)

Begun in 1948, the International Air Cadet Exchange offers CAP cadets a summer with a foreign air force as that nation’s air cadets visit the U.S. It has helped cement relations between friendly nations while offering CAP cadets both a “world view” and the experience of a young lifetime.

Many other summer programs offer a taste of Air Force life. Most cadets will spend one week each summer at a CAP encampment at a nearby Air Force base or facility.

Very selective programs have offered other specialized opportunities. Today, cadets can solo an airplane at a regional or national flight encampment or learn about other elements of aviation and aerospace.

During the Cold War years, one of the most
sought-after summer programs (after IACE) was the Jet Orientation Course – one week in Air Training Command classrooms and simulators, culminating with military dual instruction in an Air Force jet trainer.
